It begins with a decorative frieze on a Roman building — so banal, so woven into the everyday, that it almost goes unnoticed. Yet this pattern has lived beside us for centuries. The same repeating form, carved into stone, endures the passage of time. Familiar, repetitive, and remarkably unchanged.
